British entrepreneur and millionaire, Theo Paphitis once said, “There are three reasons to be in business. To make money, to have fun – and to make money”. While there may be a number of reasons as to why you’re setting up your own particular business, unless these reasons are BIG enough for you personally, you are bound to achieve less success than you had hoped and dreamed of.
Each of us has a number of goals and desires, mostly funneled by a variety of reasons. Our own personal growth, financial background, education and past life experiences contribute vastly to how and why we wish for these particular set of goals. What is equally important however is what the future holds for us. For most of us, our financial security and that of our family is our number one priority. Setting up a business is one way to try and guarantee this security. But often it’s easier said than done. To achieve success in business, you need to ensure that the reasons you have set up your current venture are solid and financially viable.
The following are six reasons why most people set up their business. You may find that you believe in a few of them, or all six of them. Whatever your reasons are however, you need to ensure they are tangible enough to take you to your end success, no matter the obstacles and challenges you face along the way.
1. Securing a rosier future for you and your family: This is one of the top reasons most entrepreneurs take their first steps to creating something they can personally contribute towards. By being in control of the time, money and energy you invest in your business, you can to a large extent be in control of its outcome, thereby guaranteeing a better future for you and your family.
2. Being independent: Given the state of today’s economy, a lot of business owners feel more comfortable knowing they are independent operators and not reliant on someone’s else’s hiring and firing decisions. While it may be twice as tough to run a business successfully in this environment, the benefits can also be twice as rewarding.
3. Taking control of your own destiny: The choices you make today are the future you create tomorrow. You can choose to learn, prosper and grow or you can choose to stay in a 9-5 limited growth environment. The decision is yours and yours alone to make. Successful entrepreneurs will make a conscious choice to take control of their destiny, by making well-informed and empowering changes.
4. Enjoying and loving what you do each and every day: Most entrepreneurs when asked, respond that they set up their businesses simply because they love what they do. This makes them happy to get to work each day and happy to overcome the challenges thrown their way. Entrepreneurs who succeed are those who have understood their talents, abilities and interests and used them to their own benefit.
5. Making a difference in the world: Another reason you may want to set up your own company is because you truly want to make a difference in the world. You may believe in starting a charitable organization which helps underprivileged children or you may just want to make your business green and eco-friendly. It you believe something with a passion, then adopting it as a main reason to set up your business cannot be far behind.
6. Being your own success story: And finally, inspiration often leads to emulation. A lot of entrepreneurs are inspired by people they look up to- business colleagues, celebrities, friends or even family members. If you feel you wish you could write your own success story, then what better way to do it than by actually living it?
As an entrepreneur, you already know the challenges you have faced and will continue to face. But there is nothing more exhilarating or rewarding than to find a reason and success in what you do; and this is exactly what your business will allow you to achieve.
Until next time, J.
